Unhinged
“Wait where am I and why is it so dark”, I reached out to my pocket and pulled out my phone. I turned on the flashlight and there I was in my kitchen in the middle of the night. In utter confusion, I thought to myself ” when the hell did I start sleepwalking?”.
As weird as it was, I thought of going back to bed because I didn’t want to mess up my sleep schedule and get yelled at by my boss for being late. I was about to leave when I felt like something was stuck in my throat and it was pretty uncomfortable.
Walking over to the sink, I grabbed an empty glass laying on the table. I filled it up and started drinking, “the tap water is supposed to be cold especially when it’s the middle of the night so why isn’t it”. The water had to be the exact same temperature as my body because I couldn’t feel anything going down my throat so I just left the glass there and headed towards my bedroom.
The bedroom door was closed shut which was a little unusual because I expected it to be open if I really was sleepwalking.
Anyways, I proceeded to open the door but the door won’t budge so I assumed something might be in the way. I started pushing at it and that’s when the realization hit me, the door was locked from the inside. I was able to somehow come up with the explanation for all the events that led to this moment but there was no way I could explain this. A million things started going through my mind and slowly fear started creeping up my body.
“It can’t be a thief considering I live on the sixth floor so maybe it was a monkey and I leave my windows open anyway. But I have never seen a monkey around here.” My heart started throbbing against my chest but I tried to stay calm.
I could still get in my bedroom through the door connecting it to the bathroom but at this point, I wasn’t sure if I even wanted to.
I walked around the corner leading to the bathroom door and found it wide open so I peeked inside and expectedly the door connecting to the bedroom was open too. With a sigh of relief, I thought to myself, ” of course, where else would I have gotten out of the room through.”
I got in and before setting my foot inside the room I reached for the light switch and turned it on. The first thing I saw sent a shiver down my spine and no it wasn’t a ghost or anything it was me lying on the bed deep asleep.
I froze right there and my whole body went numb,” am I the ghost here, have I left the plane of the living, that was a short li…” and I snapped back to my senses. My heart started racing again but this time it felt like it was trying to rip out of my chest.
I started shaking uncontrollably and everything started to go dark. I tried grabbing onto something but fell headfirst on the bathroom floor. It’s funny how seeing my own self scared me more than a ghost ever could.
The next day I woke up feeling the warm sunlight on my face. Rubbing my eyes, I got out of the bed thinking about the weird dream I had last night but I could hardly remember any of the details. I was still sleepy for some reason and decided to get ready for the office before it got too late.
I got up grabbed my stuff and as my eyes turned toward the bathroom and yes you guessed it, the door was wide open and so was the main door.
The memories from last night started flooding in and I remembered falling unconscious on the bathroom floor. “It couldn’t be”, I ran straight to the kitchen and there it was, the half-filled glass of water laying right where I left it.
